CBS Sports calls DJ Lagway a “contender” for the 2025 Heisman Trophy

DJ Lagway, the Florida football freshman quarterback who has quickly become one of college football’s most exciting players, has been named a 2025 Heisman Trophy Contender by CBS Sports.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 239-pound quarterback from Willis, Texas, had a 5-1 record as a starter this season with 1,610 passes on 93-for-157 (59.2%), 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions while carrying the ball 46 times for 97 yards.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Lagway recorded 12 completions of more than 40 yards and led all FBS passers with a 97.3 passing grade on deep balls. He also led all true freshman quarterbacks with a 59.6 pass rating (minimum 100 attempts).

As the Gators continue to build and reshape their football identity, Lagway stands out as a hopeful and key player to keep an eye on.

CBS Sports writer Blake Brockermeyer included Lagway on his list of 14 players who have a good chance of winning the 2025 Heisman Trophy.

“Lagway was promoted as the top-ranked QB in the Class of 2024 and just earned 247Sports True Freshman All-America Team honors,” Brockermeyer wrote.

If he continues to develop, he leans toward being a very high pick in two seasons, but until then he has a chance to be the face of a turnaround in Florida and one of the best quarterbacks in the country. The big-framed dual-threat QB has many well-known teams on the program next year that will provide one or two Heisman moments.”
