CBS Sports updates top 25 and 1

CBS Sports updates top 25 and 1

Although the top two teams in the country and the six ranked all lost during a busy schedule on Wednesday, there were no major changes in Thursday’s update of CBS Sports’ Top 25 and Top 1 basketball rankings, especially towards the tip.

Gary Parrish shared the update this afternoon following last night’s college basketball game, with the schedule highlighted by losses for No. 1 Kansas and No. 2 Auburn. That’s before losses to No. 5 Marquette, No. 15 Baylor, No. 18 Pittsburgh and No. 20 North Carolina. All of this took place on the second night of the SEC/ACC Challenge and as part of the Big 12-Big East Battle.

However, specific results both last night and this season have also led to a deadlock in the rankings today on CBS.

Here is Parrish’s latest rating with the top 25 and 1 for December 5th:

Previous ranking: 5

Tennessee took first place after Wednesday’s results, as it is one of the few remaining undefeated teams in the country at 8-0. This came after another loss for them in a 96-70 win Syracuse on Tuesday. The Vols win by an average margin of 26.8 ppg, including 21.3 points, against their four main opponents on the season, and have since moved up four spots to now be the top team in the country on CBS Sports.

“Based on this resume and taking into account everything else this season, Tennessee is the best option for the No. 1 seed right now if you’re looking for a team that’s undefeated, in possession of good (and overwhelming) wins, and…” strong computer numbers Parrish wrote. “Theoretically, they could stay here for a while.”

Previous ranking: 2

Despite their first loss of the season last night in Durham, Auburn remained ranked No. 2 for CBS. The Tigers started 7-1, including wins over Houston, and then won the Maui Invitational during Feast Week before falling 84-78 in their first true road game lost to Duke and had a top 10 matchup against the Blue Devils.

The loss to Duke hardly diminished what Auburn had already accomplished in the first month of the season. However, they will now look to make amends with five games remaining in their non-conference, including two at neutral sites against them Ohio State and Purdue from the Big Ten.

Previous ranking: 3

Iowa State also remained at No. 3 for CBS after winning its own Top 10 matchup last night in Ames.

After losing to Auburn in a top-five matchup in Maui, they got a shot at another top-five opponent with an 81-70 win over Marquette after Keshon Gilbert posted her best finish of the season. That still puts them in the top three with four non-conference games remaining before conference play begins in the Big 12.

Previous ranking: 4

Despite being on the losing side against the Cyclones, Marquette also maintained its own spot at No. 4 for CBS.

The Golden Eagles already had three wins against power conferences, including two in the Big Ten and one in the SEC. This top-notch Big 12 game won’t hurt their reputation too much, especially with two good matchups against Wisconsin and Dayton coming up next.

Previous ranking: 6

Purdue placed in the top five for CBS after winning the Rady Children’s Invitational championship following a win during Feast Week NC State and Ole Miss.

The Boilermakers now return to the court tonight for their conference opener Penn State.

Previous ranking: 1

Kansas fell out of first place with a score of 76:63 after its first loss of the season Creighton. The Bluejays staged an upset in Omaha after defeating the top-ranked team in the country with a emphatic victory. Still, the Jayhawks finished just outside the top five considering they still had wins over three other bluebloods in North Carolina, Michigan State and Duke.

“Kansas was the preseason No. 1 seed and, in my opinion, a reasonable option to retain the No. 1 seed as long as the Jayhawks maintained a zero in the loss column. But that’s over now. So KU cannot be No. 1,” Parrish wrote.

Previous ranking: 7

Kentucky remained ranked No. 7 on CBS despite losing its first game of the season at Clemson this week. The Wildcats fell a bit short against the Tigers in their first real loss since signing Mark Pope.

Great Britain now has the chance to make up for it with another top 10 clash, except now on the opposite coast of the country, at Gonzaga on Saturday.

Previous ranking: 8

Despite defeating the No. 2 team in the country last night in Durham, Duke remained ranked No. 8 for Parrish.

After losses in two of their other three highest-scoring games of the season, the Blue Devils had their best result of the year so far with a six-point win over Auburn. This now prepares them to really get their season going as the ACC conference opener is next.

Previous ranking: 9

Gonzaga also remained at No. 9 on CBS after not playing since its tournament ended in the Battle 4 Atlantis during Feast Week.

After being upset in overtime in the Bahamas, the Bulldogs can now pick up their third ranked win in three non-conference opportunities when Kentucky visits Seattle on Saturday.

Previous ranking: 10

Oregon was almost another ranked team that lost on Wednesday, falling behind by as many as 11 last night USC. However, the Ducks tied the score with less than five games left in the second half and beat the Trojans by eight in Los Angeles.

As a result, the Ducks are now 9-0 and remain one of the hottest teams in the country, especially with the five teams they have beaten in the last two weeks still ranked No. 10 for CBS.
