Los Angeles Chargers running back Gus Edwards will not play in his team’s Week 17 game against the New England Patriots.
Speaking to reporters Thursday after the final injury report was released, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh announced that Edwards suffered a nasty ankle injury, according to ESPN’s Kris Rhim. It’s a big blow to the Justin Herbert-led offense as JK Dobbins is also listed on the latest injury report.
Edwards’ availability was questionable as he suffered an ankle injury in the Week 16 win over the Denver Broncos, in which he rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
Harbaugh is usually vague about injuries, so getting an update saying Edwards has aggravated an issue he was suffering from just a few days earlier is probably not a good sign for the veteran running back. Edwards was only able to play in 11 games this year despite battling injuries.
The Chargers will also likely want to be conservative with the injured Dobbins ahead of the playoffs, so expect rookie Kimani Vidal to get some work against the Patriots.
