Chargers Patriots Week 17 Game Preview

5. Jefferson is rising in the secondary

There’s been something of a revolving door in the Bolts’ secondary this season.

And you can say that with certainty Tony Jefferson was a kind of savior in the backend.

Signed as a tryout free agent in June, Jefferson joined the team after impressing in mandatory minicamp.

While the 32-year-old began the season on the practice squad, he has been reinstated recently as Elijah Molden has struggled with a knee injury. Jefferson played all 64 defensive snaps against the Broncos.

“I felt ready for the occasion and the game and just tried to build on it,” Jefferson said. “It’s been a while since I’ve played this many snaps, but it was still fun. It’s a beautiful wound.”

Jefferson was out of football last season as he worked as a scouting intern for the Ravens, a team he previously played for.

That assignment saw him cross paths with Minter, who raved about the veteran’s willingness and work ethic despite not having played at the start of the season.

“You have injuries, you have guys that go in and out, he’s the guy that could go in there and play multiple positions at a moment’s notice,” Minter said. “He can go in there and run defense, get guys lined up, brings confidence and a little edge when he’s out there.”

Jefferson has seen more playing time recently since Alohi Gilman went on injured reserve.

Even though the Bolts hope to be at full strength for a possible playoff appearance, they know that they can count on Jefferson if the need arises.

“It’s really the first time in my career that I haven’t played, like I was on the team and I wasn’t playing,” said Jefferson, a 10-year veteran. “I just wanted to make sure I was ready for the opportunity when it came to just doing the right things training and stuff like that to keep my body in shape.”

“Basically it’s just a matter of staying ready and being prepared and paying attention to meetings when I haven’t played,” Jefferson added. “Just be ready to go.”
