Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes left Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns with an ankle injury.

Mahomes suffered the injury in the fourth quarter when Kansas City led 21-7. He limped off the field and was replaced late in the game by backup Carson Wentz. The Chiefs considered his return questionable, but he did not return as Kansas City secured a 21-7 victory.

Mahomes suffered the injury from a combined hit from Ogbo Okoronkwo and Mike Hall Jr. His legs became trapped under Okoronkwo’s body when Hall hit him high.

Mahomes limped off the field after the incomplete fourth pass of the game. Wentz returned to lead the offense on Kansas City’s next possession. Mahomes remained on the Kansas City sideline at the end of the game.

The injury is obviously a major concern in Kansas City as the Chiefs inch closer to the playoffs and look for a third straight Super Bowl victory. Mahomes is a two-time NFL MVP, three-time Super Bowl MVP and six-time Pro Bowler.

Kansas City has already secured a spot in the playoffs but is trying to remain the No. 1 seed in the AFC, which offers first-round away advantage and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. They also have a tight window for upcoming games around the NFL’s Christmas schedule.

Kansas City will host the Houston Texans on Saturday and play a Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers the following Wednesday, for a total of three games in 11 days, including Sunday’s game against the Browns.

This is a current story that will be updated.
