Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes week-to-week with ankle injury: reports

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a severe ankle sprain on Sunday and will progress from week to week, NBC Sports and NFL Network report.

Mahomes left the Chiefs’ 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Carson Wentz. When the game ended, he visibly limped off the field.

“Patrick, his right ankle is injured. “It’s not broken, but it hurts,” Kansas City coach Andy Reid said after the game. “He’ll start the rehab part over time and then we’ll just have to see how he does. It will literally be day by day. He probably could have gone back in. He wanted to go back inside. There was no need for that.”

Mahomes said after feeling like he could have returned to the game, but the “smart decision” was to let Wentz finish.

The Chiefs improved to 13-1 with the win. They have a two-game lead over the Buffalo Bills for first place in the AFC, but their next two games are in the next 10 days.

Kansas City next plays the Houston Texans on Saturday and then again on Christmas against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mahomes had previously suffered a severe ankle sprain. He suffered the injury in a Divisional Round playoff game in January 2023 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He missed a quarter of that game before returning, and he missed no time in the remainder of the playoffs, leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory.

Mahomes finished Sunday’s game completing 19 of 38 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. So far this season, Mahomes has thrown for 22 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and 3,348 yards.
