Christmas Eve 2024 marks the anniversary of the signing of the infamous Seattle Mariners

The holidays are here. Unfortunately for the Seattle Mariners, it doesn’t look like they’ll be getting any new additions for Christmas.

The Mariners lost several potential targets last week as first basemen Paul Goldschmidt, Christian Walker, Josh Naylor and Carlos Santana all found new homes.

Despite entering the offseason with a clear need for multiple infield spots and in the bullpen, Seattle hasn’t made any major acquisitions.

And to add salt to the wound, Christmas Eve marked the bittersweet anniversary of one of Jerry Dipoto’s most interesting signings with the Mariners.

On December 24, 2023, Seattle signed backup catcher and designated hitter Mitch Garver to a two-year, $24 million contract. It remains the largest contract awarded to a position player in free agency during Dipoto’s time in the Mariners’ front office.

Garver was used more in his first year with Seattle in 2024 than in any other season of his career (114 games played). Still, it wasn’t a productive year for the 2023 World Series champions.

Garver batted .172 with 15 home runs and 51 RBIs in 2024. He started 23 games as a catcher and 81 as a designated hitter.

At the time of his signing, the move was considered a solid decision for the Mariners. Garver had just won a ring with the Texas Rangers and was one of their most productive power hitters during their championship run. He only had a .226 batting average with three home runs and 14 RBIs in 14 playoff games.

Despite Garver’s struggles in his first year in the Pacific Northwest, many Seattle fans would likely welcome an offseason move like this after an unusual lack of activity.

There is still time for the Mariners to make a significant move in 2024. But the options are fewer now than they were a week ago.
