The mystery is over. After what felt like eons of speculation, Universal revealed that Christopher Nolan’s next film will be an adaptation of Homer’s epic The Odyssey.

The original poem dates from the 8th century BC. BC and follows the Greek hero Odysseus on his journey home after the Trojan War.

The official press release states: “Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythical action epic shot around the world using brand new Imax film technology.” The film brings Homer’s quintessential saga to Imax screens for the first time and opens in cinemas everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron are among those set to appear in the film.

“The Odyssey” is Nolan’s first feature film since “Oppenheimer,” which won seven Oscars, including best picture and best director.

It will be interesting to see how the filmmaker handles the material, which is characterized by fantastic adventures and wild creatures – sirens, gods and monsters. Exactly what this “all-new Imax film technology” is remains to be seen.

“The Odyssey” will be in theaters on July 17, 2026.
