Christopher Nolan’s upcoming multi-starrer film is titled “The Odyssey,” Universal Studios announced Monday. The film is an adaptation of the genre-defining epic of the ancient Greek poet Homer, the studio added in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

“Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythical action epic shot around the world using brand new IMAX film technology. “The film brings Homer’s quintessential saga to IMAX screens for the first time and will be released in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026,” the studio announced in a message sent to X on Monday.

Nolan’s film features a strong all-star cast led by Tom Holland, which also includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron. There has been speculation about what Nolan’s film is about, with reports claiming everything from a story about two helicopter pilots to a vampire saga. However, it has now been revealed that the film will adapt the popular story, which was originally set in the 8th century BC. was written.

“Odyssey” is expected to begin filming early next year and is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2026.

All about Homer’s epic

Odyssey, the ancient Greek poem, tells the story of the king of Ithaca, Odysseus, and his journey home after the Trojan War. A companion piece to the Iliad, the story focuses on Odysseus’ dangerous and tragic journey and covers themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning and the fight against the divine will.

While Nolan’s film will be the most well-known adaptation of the epic, there have been previous films and shows that brought Odyssey to the big screen. The 1954 Italian film “Ulysses” was directed by Mario Camerini and starred Kirk Douglas, while the 1997 miniseries “Odyssey” was directed by Andrei Konchalovsky and starred Armand Assante. Ralph Fiennes most recently played Odysseus in Uberto Pasolini’s The Return, which hit theaters earlier this month. Also released in 2000, O Brother, Where Art Thou? the Coen brothers were inspired by the poem.
