Cold winter temperatures will ease in the East, but there's a catch

Yes, we know the calendar still shows fall, but if you’re already tired of the winter cold, there’s good news: The bitter Arctic storm that has gripped much of the central, eastern and southern U.S. is slowly easing, they said Meteorologists on Saturday.

Cold temperatures will be replaced by much milder air next week, but warmth will arrive after a cold, snowy weekend across parts of the northeastern United States. Up to 30 cm of snow is expected near the Canadian border in the Great Lakes region and New England, and lows in the 20s reached as far south as Georgia and northern Florida on Saturday morning, the National Weather Service said.

“After a January-like cold start to the weekend in the East, temperatures will gradually rise through the first half of next week,” AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said in an online forecast.

However, there is a catch. The warmer weather will also bring rain and fog for many.

A line of storms will bring torrential rain to many areas of the southern and eastern United States Sunday through Thursday. Just enough cold air could move in to bring some snow to parts of the Midwest and Appalachians, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

“At a minimum, there will be periods of rain, drizzle and fog,” Sosnowski said, adding that a total of 2 to 4 inches of rain will likely fall along the central Gulf Coast, with 1 to 2 inches of rain likely in the Southeast. Parts of the Mid-Atlantic and New England could receive an inch of rain because of that pattern, he said.

Snow around the Great Lakes

Snow will still fall in the Great Lakes snowbelt regions this weekend: “The continued flow of Arctic (air) over the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes has continued to allow lake-effect snow to move downwind into the snowbelt,” the said The National Weather Service announced this on Friday. By Saturday, a clipper system will “bring more widespread snowfall across the upper Great Lakes and reach into the lower lakes Saturday night,” the weather service predicted.

“This fast-moving storm will have enough moisture to push out 1 to 3 inches of snow generally from northwestern Ontario to northern New York and northern New England, with local snow totals of 6 to 12 inches, including over some mountains,” AccuWeather meteorologist Grady Gilman said.

Overall, the weather service said up to 60 cm of additional snow was possible near the eastern shore of Lake Ontario by Saturday. Lower amounts of snowfall are expected elsewhere along the snowbelt.

First cold, then mild

After wind chills dipped below zero over the Appalachian mountains on Friday, conditions are expected to improve over the next few days as southwesterly winds begin to bring milder air from the western U.S. into the northern and central Plains, the weather service said with.

The most drastic recovery will occur over the northern high plains, where temperatures could rise to over 60 degrees by Saturday afternoon.

According to AccuWeather, the milder air will eventually move into central and northern New England later this weekend and into early next week. Highs will reach the 40s in Boston on Monday, Sosnowski said.

Bad weather in the northwest

The weather service said increasingly unsettled weather is expected across the Pacific Northwest through the weekend.

Rain showers and some high elevation snow will return to Washington State and Oregon by Saturday as the next front moves through.

“Mountain snow and lowland rain will continue to advance inland, extending into the northern Rockies early Sunday, while a low pressure area begins to develop over the northern high plains into the province of Alberta, Canada,” the weather service said.

Warm and dry in the southwest

With the exception of the Pacific Northwest, much of the rest of the western U.S. will remain dry and milder than normal this weekend as high pressure prevails across the region, the weather service said in a forecast Friday.
