Another week, another new low for the New England Patriots.

They showed few signs of life in front of their home crowd in Saturday’s 40-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. LA scored on seven straight possessions and dominated the possession battle 40-34 to 19-26.

Pats fans at Gillette Stadium reacted to the team’s recent embarrassing loss with loud boos and chants of “Fire Mayo.” NBC Sports Boston’s Patriots insider Tom E. Curran also didn’t mince his words about Saturday’s performance.

“Unprofessional performance by the New England Patriots,” Curran continued Live after the game. “In the NFL, a 32-team league, it didn’t look like a professional football team. When I look at this result, and I see it in the wake of the great loss to the Buffalo Bills last week, it undoes that.” ..

“I feel like things have definitely been called into question now because at this point in the season you had to be a better team than you were in 2023. Regardless of the merits and the logic behind moving Bill Belichick, you had to be .” Over the course of the season you built up and laid a foundation that has now broken down to the point where you have to ask yourself, ‘Would changes be for the better or just for the betterment of them?’ “That has to be decided in the next, I would say 10 days.”

Earlier in the day, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport stated that Jerod Mayo’s job as the Patriots’ head coach is considered “safe” through 2025. Former Pats linebacker Ted Johnson wonders if Saturday’s emphatic loss could change things.

“It’ll be interesting what people talk about this week because people said Jerod Mayo’s job isn’t in danger unless something really catastrophic happens. “I don’t know if that qualifies, but this is a bad loss for the Patriots today,” Johnson said.

“They haven’t managed to put together two games in a row all season. That’s a reason to be concerned about the coaching staff and these guys. The (Chargers) roster is better than yours, but they had to come. “For me, today was an unacceptable performance from the Patriots across the country.

Prized rookie quarterback Drake Maye was one of several Patriots players who came to the coaching staff’s defense last week. Ultimately, it will be up to long-time team owner Robert Kraft and president Jonathan Kraft to decide how to address the question marks on the coaching staff and front office for 2025.

New England (3-13) will wrap up its tough 2024 season next Sunday against the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium.
