DC just broke a 69-year Superman movie tradition

The new teaser trailer for 2025 Superman just broke a 69-year Superman movie trend. The new DCU teaser is full of exciting action and offers first glimpses of David Corenswet’s Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, Nicolas Hoult’s Lex Luthor and more. However, what’s most exciting is the debut of a classic (and adorable) Superman ally.

James Gunn and DC Studios have officially released the first teaser trailer Superman The premiere is planned for July 2025. It offers a new take on the Man of Steel in a new DC cinematic universe and there’s so much to be excited about. However, Superman may have been somewhat overshadowed by his four-legged ally, who breaks a major Superman tradition with his first-ever live-action film debut.

The DCU’s Superman trailer confirms that a super-powered Krypto will appear in the film

Kal-El’s adorable super dog

Shown at the beginning of the new teaser, None other than Krypto the Super Dog comes running at top speed when summoned by a beaten and broken Superman. Later in the trailer, Krypto is shown putting Kal-El’s cape in his mouth and pulling Superman and taking him home. Sporting his own red cape and yellow collar, Krypto’s debut is incredibly adorable, and James Gunn has confirmed that Krypto is based on his own dog named Ozu, both of a similar breed in appearance (and perhaps mannerisms too).

In comics and other media, Krypto is often portrayed as a very good and loyal boy. However, this was resented by Gunn Superman Krypto may have some growth/training difficulties as he had a “complicated” relationship with Superman to begin with. In any case, this new teaser seems to show that Krypto is a very good boy, guiding Kal-El to safety as the first live-action Kryptonian dog ever to appear on screen.

Why Krypto’s Superman debut is a big deal for DC and the DC Universe

Krypto has been shown on screen before and was one of the main characters in the 2022 animated film League of Super Pets where Krypto was voiced by Dwayne Johnson, as well as on live-action television Titans Series alongside Conner Kent’s Superboy. However, Krypto’s debut in a live-action film is a big first in 2025 Supermanand it will be very exciting to see how his story continues. Finally, it is likely that crypto will continue to play a role in 2026 Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, as he appeared in the original comic of the same name.

James Gunns Superman will be released on July 11, 2025.
