December 13: The cold weekend leads to icy mountains in cities on Sunday and rain in the evening

Friday morning report

As this stream of cold air settles in for a few days, something notable that may not get much attention will be the near-record high pressure. The dome of calm weather will be very strong! While the cold air brings back the sun, it can also cause discomfort for sensitive people. This is the type of weather that can lead to headaches or migraines, body aches and dry skin. It’s the opposite of weather, but has similar effects to feeling like a storm is approaching.

It will also allow for better observation of the peak of the Gemini meteor shower and possibly increasing reports of mysterious drones reaching the Mid-Atlantic.

On Sunday, the next storm will bring in the cold air and cause snow and freezing rain in the mountains. In the evening there should only be cool rain in the metropolitan areas.

There will be more rain and a few days of warming next week.

The final part of this system is the Arctic cold front moving through this morning. There were some storms and a lot of wind!

The cold temperatures and wind will dominate the rest of the day.

The band of light snow around Pittsburgh and nearby mountains is part of this jet streak producing clouds this morning.

This extended infrared view shows more clouds north of Baltimore with breakup to the south.

Near record high pressure in Canada (1051 MB). Even that 1049 MB in southern PA is VERY HIGH according to the barometer.

This weather pattern can result in very dry, sinking air and can be unpleasant if you are prone to:

Body pain
Dry skin

A new series of storm systems will emerge for a few days.

As it encounters this strong area of high pressure and cold air, an icy mix will begin in the mountains and perhaps the northern suburbs later Sunday.

Rain is expected in the cities. Then we’ll all get into the warmer current by mid-week.

The next storm will bring ice and snow to the mountains, but there will be rain in metropolitan areas later Sunday.

Next week it will rain almost every day with a series of storms. They pump in warm air and then the pattern change ends next week.

REPEATING MY MESSAGE ON THE TOPIC OF LEGEND

I understand that there are some spelling and grammatical errors, as well as occasional other errors. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer errors I may miss. I’ve made a few public statements over the years, but if you’re new here you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out about it in my sophomore year at Cornell University. However, that didn’t stop me from getting my degree in meteorology and being the first to receive the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.

One of my professors told me that I had made it this far without knowing it and that I shouldn’t let it be a crutch for the future. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely right! I miss my proofreading mistakes. The automatic spell checker on my computer sometimes misses the mark and makes the problem worse. I can also make mistakes in forecasting. Nobody is perfect at predicting the future. All maps and information are correct. The “wordy” stuff can get sticky.

There was no editor to review my work when writing and have it ready to ship in a newsworthy time frame. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this website.
