Democratic challenger Adam Gray wins California’s 13th district in the country’s final House of Representatives race

According to The Associated Press, Democrat Adam Gray has won the race for California’s 13th Congressional District, defeating incumbent Republican Rep. John Duarte.

The final seat to be named was California’s 13th Congressional District, one of the most competitive electoral districts in the Golden State. The Republicans retained the majority with 220, the Democrats trailed with 216.

Gray, a former state lawmaker who represented California’s 21st District from 2012 to 2022, is considered a centrist Democrat who focused on key concerns of Central Valley farmers such as water shortages. He also advocated for renewable energy solutions.

In a statement to X, Gray wrote that the long-awaited results were confirmation that residents were ready for “independent and responsible leadership.”

“I am honored to become the Congressman-elect for California’s 13th Congressional District. The final results confirm that this district is ready for independent and responsible leadership that will always place the people of the Valley at the forefront of partisan politics,” he wrote. “But the work has only just begun.”

“In Washington, I will work every day to provide the resources the Valley needs: clean water, better educational opportunities, stronger infrastructure and more good-paying jobs,” he wrote. “And you can count on me to build bipartisan relationships to achieve these goals.”

The race is considered one of the closest in the country. In 2022, Duarte narrowly defeated Gray by just 564 votes.

Duarte, a businessman and farmer, focused on issues such as inflation, crime and agricultural issues during his campaign.
