Dennis Schroder is “excited” alongside Stephen Curry because he is fit

SAN FRANCISCO – It didn’t take long for Dennis Schroder to get over the initial shock of being traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Golden State Warriors.

Although Schroder and his family had recently settled into a new home, the point guard began thinking about playing alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, as well as Steve Kerr.

“Just being able to be around them now, especially Steph,” Schroder said Tuesday after meeting his new teammates. “He is one of, if not the best point guard of all time. Best shooter, of course. I’m just excited to see how it works and to be a part of it.”

“I’ve played with a lot of future Hall of Famers over the last few years. He and Draymond will complete it somewhat now.”

The Warriors can’t wait to add the 12-year veteran to the mix. Since starting 12-3, they have lost eight of their last ten games.

Kerr said Schroder could be in the starting lineup Thursday when the Warriors play in Memphis. The Warriors coach likes the idea of ​​using the two point guards together so Schroder can help set Curry up for some easier scoring opportunities.

And Kerr said Schroder will be the point guard on the field to help organize the second unit in the “non-Steph” minutes.

“We need to take some of the pressure off Steph,” Kerr said. “I think he’s had to take on an unusually large amount of responsibility on offense this year.”

“What we were missing is another pick-and-roll player so Steph doesn’t have to run so much pick-and-roll the whole game and wear himself out.”

Kerr said the Warriors could use Schroder in pick-and-roll situations, similar to what they did with Chris Paul last season.

Schroder is averaging 18.4 points, 6.6 assists and 38.7% shooting from behind the arc. The Warriors need another scorer to support Curry, Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga.

Schroder’s defense will also be a welcome addition. The Warriors are hoping Schroder can help fill the void left by De’Anthony Melton’s season-ending knee injury. The two-way guard was a healthy starter and was seen as a valuable complement to Curry. Melton was traded to Brooklyn along with Reece Beekman and three second-round picks for Schroder and a second-round pick.

“Really, really excited to play with Draymond,” Schroder said. “We have a pretty good relationship. I’m really looking forward to playing on the court with another Hall of Famer who was always hell when you were on the other side, talking crap, just being competitive and getting out there. “With a win it is quite unique and special to unite now (our defense and our competitiveness).

Kerr said Schroder was in action on the opposing team against Curry’s team to get the point guard acclimated to the second unit. But Schroder is also looking forward to playing alongside Curry.

“Every time I see Golden State play, I’m excited because he plays like that,” Schröder said. “He plays it like a video game… he’s one of the superstars that I have a lot of respect for because he doesn’t care if he scores 10, 20, 30 or 40 points.”
