Derrick White injury: The Celtics guard was demoted during the Bulls game

While the Celtics were fully healthy for the first time this season when they took on the Bulls on Friday, they did suffer a new injury. Derrick White was downgraded to “doubtful to return” on the Celtics’ injury report with a sore right foot.

C’s coach Joe Mazzulla said after Friday’s game that he spoke to White after the game and White said he was fine. However, Mazzulla said he had no further updates.

White played 24 minutes in Friday’s win over the Bulls, posting 16 points, six rebounds and four assists while having a productive night. But that sore right foot showed up in Friday’s NBA Cup game against the Bulls. White left the game with 8:08 left in the third quarter.

The Celtics had a clean injury record for the first time this season heading into Friday’s game. Kristaps Porzingis had missed the first 17 games of the season but returned this week in the Clippers’ stunning win. This allowed the C’s to tinker with their rotations and looks during Friday’s game.

But White left early in the third quarter as the Celtics found themselves in a dogfight with the Clippers. The severity of the injury is still unclear and it is not yet known whether White could miss any additional time other than Friday’s game. The reigning champions should keep this in mind in the future.
