Des Moines activates snow ordinance. Here you can find out where you can and cannot park.

Des Moines activates snow ordinance. Here you can find out where you can and cannot park.

The City of Des Moines put its snow ordinance into effect at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12. Parking is not permitted on snow routes until further notice, the city announced on social media.

Where can I park in Des Moines during a snow order?

Parking on both sides of the road is prohibited on snowy stretches. Plowing of residential areas will begin as soon as the snowfall stops, the city said on social media.

Some neighborhoods with limited off-street parking have “odd/even” signage, meaning drivers must park on the odd or even side depending on the calendar date. For example, on December 12th – an even number – park on the side of the street where the last digit of the house numbers is even.

If you don’t see odd/even or snow route signs, you are on a residential street. Restrictions may overlap, but residents are asked not to park on the street during snowfall to allow the street to be cleared curb to curb.

There are no weather-related parking restrictions in downtown Des Moines during normal snowplow operations. However, if you park six feet away while snow is being cleared, you run the risk of your car being run over by city snow plows.

How can I get updates about snow-related parking restrictions in Des Moines?

Parking updates can be received via text message by texting “SNOW” to (515) 355-8815. You can also subscribe to email alerts at dsm.city/subscribe
