Dick Van Dyke says he had to “crawl” to escape the Malibu wildfires

Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke was among tens of thousands of people in Malibu, California, who had to be evacuated due to widespread wildfires.

Van Dyke, who turned 99 on Friday, Dec. 13, told KARE 11 that he “tried to crawl to the car” when he was exhausted.

“I couldn’t get up,” the “Mary Poppins” star told the television station.

That’s when three of Van Dyke’s neighbors came to his rescue.

“Three neighbors came and carried me out and came back and put out a small fire in the guest house and saved me,” he told KARE 11.

Van Dyke later posted on Facebook that he and his wife Arlene “evacuated safely with our animals,” except for their cat Bobo, who was later found.

On the actor’s post, his loved ones left encouraging messages, including the band Coldplay. Van Dyke stars in the music video for the band’s single “ALL MY LOVE,” which was released in November.

“Dick – we send love and prayers to you, Arlene and everyone affected by these fires,” Coldplay wrote in the Facebook post. “Call us if there is anything we can do for you. I love Phil, Chris, Guy, Jonny and Will.

The legendary entertainer wasn’t the only celebrity forced to leave their home due to the Franklin fire that broke out on Monday, December 9th. Music icon Cher and actress Mira Sorvino also had to evacuate, according to NME.

The Franklin Fire was only 20% contained across more than 6 square miles as of Thursday, the Associated Press reported. According to the outlet, the fire destroyed four homes and damaged at least six others.

More than 3,700 residents were allowed to return to their homes Thursday, while another 1,600 were still under evacuation orders, the AP said.

In total, about 20,000 residents of the city and surrounding areas have been affected by mandatory evacuation orders and warnings since the fire broke out, the outlet reported.
