Direct from Christchurch to San Francisco – United Airlines is back

Last year, the direct route to Christchurch increased the number of visitors from the US to Te Waipounamu, the South Island, by almost 80%. The airport is forecasting a similar number of American visitors this season; Bookings are already good.

United’s return is a real vote of confidence for the South Island. The flight is part of a collaboration between United Airlines and Air New Zealand as part of their joint venture and its success is due to three specific, unique needs:

tourism: The direct route is timed to coincide with peak tourist season and offers American travelers easy access to the South Island’s stunning landscapes and endless opportunities for adventure, boosting the local tourism industry.

Antarctic operations: The flight supports the travel of a significant number of American and international scientists and technicians through Christchurch, which is the main gateway of the U.S. Antarctic program.

Exports: The service improves trading opportunities, the cargo space fills up quickly; New Zealand’s fresh exports such as kiwis, fish and meat are destined for US markets.

Justin Watson, Managing Director of Christchurch Airport, said:

“United Airlines’ direct flight from San Francisco is vital to Christchurch and the South Island. It is a stepping stone to the US and beyond, supporting our exporters and strengthening our role as a hub for Antarctic operations. We are pleased to see this partnership flourishing.”

Tim Wallis, United Airlines regional manager for Australia and New Zealand, said:

“After a solid first season last year, we are pleased to bring this seasonal service back to Christchurch and we look forward to continuing this air bridge between the United States and the South Island.” This route shows the demand for travel and trade and we are pleased “We look forward to another promising season.”

Thanks to United’s partnership with Air New Zealand, U.S. travelers can enjoy easy connections to more than 30 destinations in New Zealand and the South Pacific, and New Zealanders can make the most of more than 125 destinations in the United States.

This seamless connection to San Francisco ensures that Christchurch continues to play an important role in tourism, science and commerce.
