Donald Trump was named Time’s Person of the Year 2024 – DW – December 12, 2024

Time Magazine has named US President-elect Donald Trump Person of the Year 2024.

In its statement, the magazine said Trump was chosen “to engineer a comeback of historic proportions, to drive a once-in-a-lifetime political realignment” as well as “to reshape the American presidency and transform America’s role in the world.” .”

This is the second time Trump has received the award and the first after winning his first presidency in 2016.

Sam Jacobs, editor-in-chief of Time, explained the decision to the US broadcaster NBC with the words: “For better or for worse, (Trump) had the greatest influence on news in 2024.”

“It’s hard to deny that the person who moves into the Oval Office is the most influential person in the news industry.”

Jacobs called the decision “easier than in years past.”

Donald Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States in last November’s election, beating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

The Democratic candidate was among the candidates for the award alongside Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Criticism of Ukraine

In an interview with the magazine, Trump criticized Ukraine’s use of U.S.-supplied missiles deep inside Russian territory, calling it “crazy.”

“I am strictly against sending missiles hundreds of kilometers into Russia. Why are we doing this? We are only escalating this war and making it worse. “That shouldn’t have happened,” said the elected US president.

Trump also discussed his deportation plans, saying there “may” be new camps to hold detained migrants before they are deported. He also added that the military could be used to detain and deport migrants.
