Dons Top Warriors extend winning streak

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men’s basketball team (8-2) defended its home court after four home games on Wednesday night, remaining perfect at home as the Dons defeated Stanislaus State (4-5). 1-2 CCAA), 68-52, at the War Memorial in the Sobrato Center.

In case you missed it:

  • Although Stanislaus State scored the first points of the night, San Francisco responded early with an 11-0 run in the opening minutes and took an 11-3 lead at the first timeout.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Warriors responded to the USF run with a 7-0 run of their own, breaking into an 11-10 tie at 14:49.
  • Harness the power of a fastbreak layup Marcus Williams Looking to extend their lead, San Francisco held steady at 16-10 at 14:02, but Stanislaus State stayed close with a jumper from Jeremiah Jones at 13:41 to stay within four points at 16-12.
  • Just before halfway through the first half, five points in a row Ryan Beasley helped the Dons stay in control, 22-15.
  • San Francisco traded baskets for the remainder of the first twenty minutes and led by as many as seven points in the final moments of the first half, but the Dons could not separate themselves. At halftime, both teams were 33-1.
  • After the break, two free throws from Jones gave the Warriors a 39:35 lead (17:16). San Francisco responded with an 8-0 run for a 43-39 lead, capped off by a breakaway slam from Tyrone Riley IV at 3:21 p.m.
  • They didn’t relinquish their lead for the rest of the contest, a layup from James O’Donnell at 10:37 a.m. helped the Dons stay in control, 53-44. Less than two minutes later, a jumper from Jason-Rivera Torres made it a ten-point game, 55-45.
  • Converting consecutive triples from beyond the arc by Newbury and Carlton Linguard Jr. The Green and Gold took a 14-point lead, 63-49, with 6:00 minutes remaining in regulation.
  • To close out the night, goals from Newbury and O’Donnell tied the game for San Francisco and the Dons secured a 68-52 victory over Stanislaus State.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • Newbury was efficient offensively and was named player of the game as the forward led both teams with 17 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field. Overall, the senior also had four rebounds and three assists and matched his season high with three blocks.
  • Williams (13 points) and Thomas (10 points) completed the double-digit scorers for the Green and Gold and also celebrated success on offense.
  • As a team, San Francisco dominated Stanislaus State in game points (48-13), fast break points (25-4), points after turnovers (21-12) and bench points (17-7). At the boards, the Dons finished with a +14 lead as the green and gold outshot the Warriors 43-29.

San Francisco travels to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Next weekend, the Dons will face Loyola Chicago in the third game of the MKE Tip-off tripleheader on Sunday, December 15th.
