Drivers will have to deal with sub-freezing temperatures and icy roads while commuting on Tuesday morning

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Drivers’ concerns shifted from snowy roads Monday to subzero temperatures and snow-covered, icy surfaces during the morning rush hour in El Paso County on Tuesday.

Accidents and slides were not as common Tuesday morning as they were Monday, when heavy snow quickly accumulated late morning into the afternoon.

KRDO 13 drove past a two-car accident on Research Parkway just before 9 a.m. Tuesday; A westbound SUV apparently crossed into the median and into another SUV traveling in the opposite direction.

There were no apparent injuries.

Snow and ice were packed so tightly on some major roads and streets that snowplows were unable to remove them.

However, Tuesday’s sunshine – even with temperatures below freezing – caused snow and ice to melt, turning surfaces from slippery to sloppy.

Slush and water on roads can be just as dangerous as snow and ice because they obscure the driver’s visibility. Drivers should make sure they have enough windshield washer fluid in their containers.

However, for one KRDO 13 employee, there was another concern.

“I have a crack in my windshield,” the employee said. “I just got this car not long ago.”

The recent winter weather is also likely to create new potholes or worsen existing ones; A city spokesman said last week that crews had patched nearly 92,000 potholes this year.
