Dylan Raiola talks about Kirk Ferentz and Phil Parker’s partnership, which has lasted longer than him

Dylan Raiola knows Iowa has a history of elite defensive play in the Kirk Ferentz era. The freshman quarterback is also aware that this is due to the long partnership between Ferentz and defensive coordinator Phil Parker.

This partnership dates back to 1999, when Parker joined Ferentz’s first coaching staff with the Hawkeyes as defensive line coach. Parker took on the DC role in 2012 and has since led several prestigious units in Iowa City.

How impressive is this continued partnership? At his press conference on Tuesday, Raiola acknowledged that Ferentz and Parker have been fielding elite defenses for longer than the QB has been alive.

“Their head coach and DC have been together since before I was born,” Raiola said. “Of course a lot of experience. They play very solidly, they play very well together. Since it’s the last game, you can see how they’re getting better and progressing every week. We have to be prepared for whatever they have for us.”

While Parker’s unit represents another strong defense, the 2024 version of the Hawkeyes has caused some cracks at times. The Hawkeyes rank just 6th in the B1G in total defense with 311.7 yards per game.

However, the challenge for Raiola, especially as a rookie, will be avoiding negative plays. The Hawkeyes are tied for the lead in the B1G with 16 interceptions this season, and a crucial turnover at the wrong moment could reverse the Black Friday showdown.
