Elon Musk’s OpenAI launches AI video generator “Sora,” now available to the public (we still have a long way to go)

At least it Was open to the public. I tried to sign up for an account myself but was met with the error “Account creation not currently available.” Too much traffic, I imagine. Too many people are excited to see if Sora will let them create AI sex tapes of their favorite music artist. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the answer to that is still “no” for a text-to-video AI software that’s as mainstream as Sora. But guaranteed, someone at OpenAI has access to the unfiltered technology. And this man (or woman) is cooking up some of the strangest AI porn imaginable. If you don’t believe Elon Musk downloaded Sora-X onto his home computer, then I can sell you a bridge.

Since we first started seeing hyperrealistic AI photos circulating the internet, my takeaway has been the same. The photos and videos seem so incredibly real on so many levels. Technology seems to be able to handle all seemingly difficult tasks. But the things that should be easy… like putting five fingers on one hand or spelling a simple word. It’s just not quite clear. It never gives a video the finishing touches it needs to make it usable in real life.

From the videos I saw today, Sora looks very good. Especially when it comes to creating people. It can only handle so much movement before an arm does something an arm shouldn’t be able to do, or a face momentarily turns into the Goonies sloth. It’s still difficult when it comes to people touching each other or people having any kind of physical interaction.

And for the love of God, don’t ask Sora to make your creation eat soup. At least not in the European way.

But Sora seems to have a much better handle on animals and nature. For every troubling attempt to create a human, there’s a “dog on a surfboard” or a “cat at Christmas” to balance it out.

One of the coolest features for me, if Sora is ever able to nail it, is that you can upload a personal photo and have the AI bring it to life. However, this gentleman from Marques Brownlee tried it with a picture of him and the kangaroo and another picture of him playing ultimate Frisbee. The results were worrying.

So there are still a lot of problems that need to be solved. But if you need an overhead drone shot that shows some nature… Or a slow pan shot over a cloudy New York City. Sora is here for you.

I feel like we still have a long way to go before the average person can start producing AI videos that can pass as real life. In a way that can cause serious problems for people. When we get to this point, I will officially be scared. I’m not sure it will happen in my lifetime, but one day they will. One day we’ll see a disturbing video of Diddy and Jay-Z circulating the internet, they’ll insist it’s AI, and no one will know who to believe. It will just be terrible. I’m still not sure what the actual benefits of this are, other than AI videos being “kinda cool.” But regardless, we seem committed to making the technology as good as possible. For whatever reason.
