Elton John gives update on vision loss and can’t see stage at musical

Elton John talks about losing his eyesight.

The legendary musician, 77, told the audience on opening night about The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical in London on Sunday, December 1, that he had difficulty seeing the stage, according to the Daily Mail. (John provided the music for the musical.)

“As some of you may know, I have been struggling and have now lost my sight. I didn’t get to see the performance, but I enjoyed it,” John said, according to the outlet.

The post reports that John was “supported off stage” by his husband, David Furnish62, whom the singer praised for supporting him through his health issues.

In November, John shared during an interview with Good morning America‘S Robin Roberts that he had gone blind in his right eye in the summer.

“I had an infection in the south of France,” he said. “It’s been four months since I lost my sight and my left eye isn’t the best anymore.”

John said there was “hope and encouragement” that he would eventually be okay.

“I’m kind of stuck in the moment,” he added, noting that he wasn’t sure if it was possible to go into the studio and record music right now.

“First of all, I can’t recognize any text. We’re taking the initiative to make it better, but right now that’s what we’re really focused on,” John explained. “It’s never lucky that something like this happens. It kind of blew my mind and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t see anything.”

John first described his eye problems in a statement on Instagram in early September.

“Over the summer I struggled with a serious eye infection that unfortunately left me with limited vision in only one eye,” the singer said. “I am recovering, but it is an extremely slow process and it will take some time before the affected eye can see again.”

“I have spent the summer quietly recuperating at home and am positive about the progress I have made so far in my healing and recovery,” he continued, before signing the letter “with love and gratitude.” .
