Elton John opens up about his vision loss, saying he 'can't see anything'

Elton John is unsure when he will be able to record again as he continues to struggle with vision loss.

The 77-year-old “Rocket Man” singer shared in a “Good Morning America” interview that aired Monday that he “unfortunately lost my vision in my right eye” due to an infection.

“It’s been four months since I couldn’t see,” he said. “And my left eye isn’t the best. There’s hope and encouragement that it’s going to be okay, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment because I can do (an interview) like that, but to go into the studio and record, I don’t know because I don’t have any lyrics at first can see.

John, who said he was “taking the initiative” to improve his eyesight, added: “It kind of blew me away. I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything. I can’t see anything.”

The EGOT winner shared on social media back in September that he was suffering from a “severe eye infection” that had resulted in “limited” vision in one eye. He said he is healing, but it has been an “extremely slow process and it will take some time before the affected eye can see again.”

“I am so grateful to the outstanding medical and nursing team and my family who have taken such good care of me over the last few weeks,” he wrote. “I have spent the summer quietly recuperating at home and am positive about the progress I have made so far in my healing and recovery.”

John received an outpouring of congratulations when he shared his September health update. Tennis star Billie Jean King wrote: “Sending you our love and support. Feel better soon, friend.”

The five-time Grammy Award-winning singer completed his most recent tour last summer. In 2021, he postponed a number of shows on the tour and said he would undergo hip surgery due to “increasing difficulty moving” after a fall.

Last August, John was also hospitalized after a slip and fall at home. A spokesperson told USA TODAY that he was “immediately discharged” and is in good health following checkups.

John is the subject of the new documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be released on Disney+ on December 13th. He worked with Brandi Carlile on the song “Never Too Late,” which John told “GMA” “encapsulates what I’ve been through.”

“I went through so much and came out on the other side,” he said. “But I’m always happy.”
