Elton John reveals vision loss after eye infection

Elton John revealed he has lost his sight after an eye infection.

The renowned singer-songwriter said at a gala performance in the West End: The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical (for which he wrote the lyrics) that he could only enjoy the show in an auditory way, according to the BBC.

“I lost my sight and couldn’t see the performance, but I enjoyed listening to it,” he said on stage at the charity event for the Elton John AIDS Foundation at the Dominion Theater in London on Sunday evening. According to the Daily MailHe was supported off stage by his husband David Furnish.

“To my husband, who was my rock because I couldn’t get to many of the previews,” he added Daily Mail. “I have a hard time watching it, but I love hearing it and it sounded good tonight. Thanks for coming!”

Last week, the five-time Grammy winner told ABC News’ Robin Roberts that his eyesight had worsened and that plans for a new album had been put on hold due to the health issue.

“It’s been a while since I’ve done anything,” he said. “I just need to get off my ass. Unfortunately, I lost my vision in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France. And it’s been four months since I couldn’t see anything. And my left eye isn’t the greatest. So there’s hope and encouragement that it’s going to be okay, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment.”

He continued: “Because I can do something like that (interview), but going into the studio and recording – I don’t know because I can’t see any text at first. “We’re taking the initiative to do it better, but im Right now that’s what we’re focused on. It’s never a stroke of luck that something like this happens. And it kind of blew my mind and I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t see anything.”

Still, the “Rocket Man” musician reiterated his gratitude while promoting his upcoming documentary Elton John: It’s never too latePremieres in the US on Disney+ on December 13th. “I’m so lucky, I’m the luckiest man in the world,” he said.
