Pop icon Elton John said Sunday that he had a hard time seeing his new musical “The Devil Wears Prada” after losing his sight due to an eye infection.

At the end of the musical’s opening night at London’s Dominion Theatre, which was also a charity gala for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, John updated the audience on his condition.

“I haven’t been able to come to a lot of the previews because, as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight and so it’s difficult for me to see,” he said. “But I love hearing it and it sounded pretty good tonight.”

John, 77, revealed in September that he had been battling a “severe eye infection” which left him with “limited vision in only one eye.” He said it was healing, but “it will take some time before the affected eye can see again.”

Last week, he told “Good Morning America” ​​that there was “hope and encouragement” that he would recover, but admitted he couldn’t even see a lyric in the studio.

“I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t see anything,” John said.

John retired from touring in 2023, but wrote the music for The Devil Wears Prada, a stage musical based on the 2006 film (which in turn was based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel) about a young journalist who grappling with the demands of a fashion magazine and its fearsome editor. In addition to the show, he has a documentary about him, “Elton John: Never Too Late,” coming out December 13th.
