Elton John criticized the legalization of marijuana in parts of North America, saying it was “one of the biggest mistakes of all time.”

The musician, who ended his touring career last year and has been sober for 34 years, has helped other celebrities such as Eminem and Robbie Williams recover from addiction.

John, who was named Time’s Icon of the Year, told the magazine it was “hard to hear” how bad your behavior had become and said the admission helped him get clean.

He said marijuana was “addictive” and said, “It leads to other drugs.” And when you’re stoned – and I was stoned – you don’t think normally. Legalizing marijuana in America and Canada is one of the biggest mistakes of all time.”

In an interview with David Frost in 1999, John revealed that his throat problems were caused by marijuana during a tour of Australia in the mid-1980s, and said he had stopped using the drug on the advice of doctors.

In Canada, cannabis has been legal for adults since 2018, with certain restrictions, including on the amount people can possess and distribute. Many US states, including California, have also legalized cannabis for medical or recreational purposes, but it remains illegal in others.

John also talked about his “short fuse” and said he can snap “when I’m tired, exhausted or overwhelmed.” His temperament was explored in a 1997 documentary film entitled Tantrums and Tiaras. But John also attributes his ability to write songs quickly to his impatience, saying: “It’s really effortless. When I get a lyric and look at it, the song comes right out.”

His husband, David Furnish, is releasing a new documentary, “Elton John: Never Too Late,” with fellow director RJ Cutler, which follows the veteran singer as he prepares for his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where he performed. shows two sold-out concerts in 1975.
