Enes Unal’s stunning free-kick earns Bournemouth a point against West Ham | Premier League

Bournemouth just don’t know when they’re beaten. Substitute Enes Unal fired an unstoppable free-kick into the top corner, seconds after West Ham secured an unlikely lead thanks to a controversial penalty. Another Bournemouth substitute, Tyler Adams, was penalized for handling Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross from the right, and Lucas Paquetá scored the subsequent penalty, which was awarded following a VAR review.

Lopetegui insisted the bounce back from a welcome home win against Wolves had been forgotten as West Ham sought back-to-back league wins for the first time this season. The West Ham manager made two changes, one of which was forced by Emerson’s suspension, with Wan-Bissaka moving to left-back and Vladimir Coufal starting at right-back. Lucas Paquetá, who was struggling with his form, was a surprise replacement for Crysencio Summerville.

West Ham’s players wore black armbands as a tribute to their former academy goalkeeper Oscar Fairs, who died aged 15, and after nine minutes the away team chanted the name of their number 9 Michail Antonio, who miraculously died earlier this month survived a car accident. They visited Antonio, who is expected to be sidelined for at least a year, in hospital in London at the weekend. It was a nice gesture from Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola to join the applause that raged throughout the stadium despite being engrossed in a lively game.

From the moment Ryan Christie defeated Mohammed Kudus in 13 seconds, it was a hectic event. Milos Kerkez won Bournemouth an early corner at the end of one of his trademark marauding full-back runs. Bournemouth had their first significant chance when Antoine Semenyo sent a bouncing ball against the post in the 12th minute. The move came from a ball from Kepa Arrizabalaga downfield. Semenyo beat Wan-Bissaka for a header, Evanilson beat Konstantinos Mavropanos and then Justin Kluivert headed the loose ball into the path of Semenyo, who got over the ball and hit the post with a right-footed shot. This chance seemed to shake up West Ham. Just before half-time, Lukasz Fabianski saved Dango Ouattara’s tame shot at the back post.

Lopetegui looked frustrated as West Ham – as in recent weeks – failed to make the most of their chances. He turned on his heels as Jarrod Bowen sent a clever left-footed shot against the crossbar after the West Ham captain fended off a Kudus through ball from Illia Zabarnyi and Lewis Cook to create space for a shot on goal. Bowen then forced another good save after Kudus hit a cross towards the front post. Bowen’s first touch took him away from Zabarnyi but left him playing from an awkward angle, but still forced an instinctive save.

Lopetegui arched his back after Carlos Soler missed a shot just wide of the far post after a right-footed shot to evade Bournemouth captain Adam Smith. Soucek then sent a shot wide under pressure from Ouattara after Dean Huijsen and Kerkez failed to clear.

The second half was difficult to watch from West Ham’s perspective. Bournemouth returned with their usual endearing intensity and West Ham had to withstand the pressure and survive a few scares along the way. Ouattara saw a shot from a short corner deflect wide two minutes after the restart, and then Fabianski conceded a Semenyo shot. Christie had no such problem with conviction, his sharp left-footed shot following Evanilson’s shot prompting a right-hand save. The bad news for West Ham was that there were still over 40 minutes to play.

Lopetegui seemed to recognize this and soon Niclas Füllkrug replaced the cautioned Soler. West Ham had to stem the flow. Maximilian Kilman, who impressed at centre-back, intercepted the ball crucially, shuffling over Evanilson’s backhand and blocking Semenyo’s shot after Bournemouth accelerated upwards. Zabarnyi then headed wide from a recycled corner. West Ham’s creative powers were now exhausted.

When West Ham caught a rare glimpse of Bournemouth’s goal in the second half, Zabarnyi was quickly there to snuff out the danger. After Füllkrug blocked a pass for Kudus, Zabarnyi threw his body to the ground to intervene in time. Fabianski made a great stop at his front post to palm Evanilson’s header from Christie’s corner late to safety and West Ham focused on keeping the ball out rather than attacking at the other end.

Lopetegui’s move to a back five, which gave Ollie Scarles his Premier League debut and only his second senior appearance, was indicative of the plan.

It seemed like a dangerous game to play against a team that has a habit of scoring late as they have now scored a league-high ten goals in the final 15 minutes of play, including five in stoppage time. Substitute Enes Unal canceled out Paquetá’s penalty with a powerful free kick from 30 meters that shot into the top left corner.
