LSU women’s basketball earned another thrilling victory on Thursday night, defeating Stanford 94-88 in overtime. That becomes an issue for the Tigers, who continue to flirt with fire but continue to rack up wins.

Kim Mulkey’s group is 10-0 on the year and has picked up some impressive wins.

With 18 seconds left, LSU guard Kaylin Gilbert had a three-pointer to cut the deficit to two. Moments later, Flau’Jae Johnson forced a turnover. From there, Mikaylah Williams scored the winning goal by firing a fadeaway jump shot from the free throw line to make it 80-0.

In stoppage time, Williams opened the scoring with a three-pointer, and from there LSU outran Stanford and took the win.

Williams finished the season with a season-high 32 points. The second-year student is developing into LSU’s star in the backcourt.

Conference play is getting closer and LSU should be able to handle business by then.

Here’s what Kim Mulkey said after the win.

Fans leave early

Mikaylah Williams was asked if she noticed fans leaving early, but Mulkey chimed in with her thoughts.

“I did, and I took names. I won’t see them at church on Sunday because I’m away, but I will see them next Sunday “Some of them turned around again,” Mulkey said.

The intensity of the crowd

“The thing about this game is that we’re intense there,” Mulkey said. “You don’t take anything personal. These children are mine and I am theirs.”

“We chose each other and I’m not the only one standing up and challenging them. I could never imagine being a passive trainer. I could never imagine playing for a passive coach because I tend to think that kids are a reflection of that coaching staff. And we won’t give up on them.

The final game of regulation

“What I designed wasn’t exactly for Mikaylah. It just didn’t work out. But it was about getting it into Mikaylah’s hands, but it was for KG that came over real quick because I didn’t go straight for three.” “I wanted to win the tie,” Mulkey said.

If Williams couldn’t get the ball to Gilbert, Mulkey told Williams to use a screen from Anneesah Morrow to block a shot.

“She didn’t even have to use the screen. And that’s exactly what happened,” Mulkey said.

The smaller cast

“I didn’t like it, but it won for us, so I liked it,” Mulkey said.

“You know, I always learned that from the best I played for. You can plan the game however you want. We worked for three good days, had great scouting reports, great practices, and then everything can be thrown out the window as needed. “I never thought I’d have to go as small as I did.

“I thought we could protect them better with smaller players, and it worked,” Mulkey said.

On Kaylin Gilbert’s big night

“KG simply – she is deceptively fast. She sometimes looks like she’s not playing hard or not playing faster or as fast as she can, and then all of a sudden she has that little explosive step to get into the paint and make things happen. I Once again I thought their defense on the ball was good.

“She would get over screens. She would be lying on the floor in them. You know, the kid was in tears after the game, and this is her journey.”

“We’re definitely excited for her to be at LSU. I say that at every press conference,” Mulkey said.

For the aftermath

Mulkey said she didn’t want to judge the injury time of that game, but said Sa’Myah Smith came up big.

“She had some distractions that were big for us,” Mulkey said. “Sa’Myah gave us a scare the other night. “Sa’Myah is working extremely hard to get back to where she was,” Mulkey said.

But with the smaller lineup, Mulkey said, there was no room for the big guys in the game Thursday.
