Examining the U.S. Border, Housing Policy for San Diego and Beyond

Hello,

Editor-in-Chief Jamie Self here. Before we close out 2024, I want to share with you some of the great work our team has done.

At innewsource, We strive to improve the lives of our neighbors in everything we do fact-based, unbiased investigative journalism.

Producing these stories requires time, resources and experienced investigative reporters and editors. All of our work is rigorously vetted through our intensive fact-checking protocol, unmatched in the San Diego region.

The care with which we carry out our work ensures this The messages you receive from us are the most reliable of everything you will get anywhere.

Here are some examples of this Our investigative reporting had an impact in 2024:

Housing policy has changed

In 2024 alone our exclusive reporting prompted housing associations across the county to comply with an important state law and protect low-income tenants from excessive and illegal rent increases. This will protect around 30,000 tenants, even though this was not the case before.

Responsibility for healthcare providers

Following our 2022 investigation into overdose deaths and unsafe conditions at the Veterans Village of San Diego, we only wrote about another deathmore scrutiny from regulators and, ultimately, the state’s revocation of the center’s license to provide residential substance abuse treatment.

No other news outlet in San Diego covered this story until we broke the news about the center’s license.

Investigation of the border

Sofía Mejías-Pascoe, our border and immigration reporter, revealed one suspected perpetrator at the border police – The agent has since been charged in three separate incidents.

She also did some research systemic failures in medical answers on health emergencies at the US-Mexico border wall. Their report questioned why a migrant was trapped on the border wall for more than 20 minutes, screaming for help before she fell to her deathwhile a Border Patrol agent watched from below, seemingly unable to help her.

Other news outlets picked up the press release about the incident as it happened, but no one has spent as much time looking into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death as Sofía ask critical questions It was one of the many agencies involved to retrace the events of that night and determine whether anyone was held responsible.

We understand that too accurate reporting on immigration requires spending time observing what is actually happening at the border. For this reason We sent teams of reporters to Jacumba to report for 48 hours as migrants crossed the border and waited to be processed by the U.S. Border Patrol.

Adding to the concerns of refugee farmers

When refugee farmers accused a local nonprofit of controlling access to a community garden without legal permission, our reporting delved into the details alone and revealed that the nonprofit actually had no lease on the land—and The city shared some of the blame. Our reporting was translated into several languages and posted on a notice board in the garden so that farmers, including many refugees, could be informed.

Study of political power

Ahead of the 2024 election, we leveraged our campaign finance and data expertise to engage with political campaigns, fact-check the rhetoric, and track success. We’ve uncovered the special interests behind a statewide half-cent sales tax and explained how to do it Developers donated to a conservative candidate for district leader in a coalition ostensibly about helping the homeless.

We also wrote about one Extensive political activities of the district church Activities and how they oppose laws that restrict the activities of religious organizations in exchange for tax exemption and transparency.

We firmly believe that you won’t find our investigative reporting – in-depth, fact-based, meaningful – anywhere else.

If you agree, please consider supporting our work today.
