First weather alert: Yellow alert due to strong winds

ROCHESTER, NY – A storm will move west of Buffalo Sunday night and early Monday. And it’s this proximity to Western New York that will produce strong winds over the next 24 hours. On Monday, the immediate Rochester area will experience wind gusts approaching 50 mph, and communities between Rochester and Buffalo may experience wind gusts approaching 60 mph. These wind speeds can cause isolated damage to trees and power lines. The arrival of these strong gusts will begin any time after 9 a.m. on Monday. These winds should slowly decrease throughout Monday evening.

Look for a patchy shower Sunday evening. It will be very mild for a December night, with low temperatures around 40°C. Expect another occasional shower on Monday, with temperatures falling into the high 40s to 30s by the end of the day. Again, wind speeds will be 20 to 40 mph from the southwest, with gusts around 50 mph (higher speeds west of Rochester). There will be more clouds and showers on New Year’s Eve, temperatures will be in the high 40s and then fall into the 30s as we ring in the New Year. It will be colder on New Year’s Day with wet snow showers likely, which could easily accumulate into the evening. The temperature will drop below 30°C.
