Five people are missing after a fishing boat reportedly capsized off the coast of Alaska Alaska

The U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday it was searching for five people after a fishing boat reportedly capsized in rough weather and high seas near the Alaska capital of Juneau.

The crew of the approximately 50-foot (15-meter) boat, the Wind Walker, sent a mayday call around 12:10 p.m. that the ship was capsizing, but Coast Guard attempts to obtain further information from the crew stalled, according to a press release unanswered dismissal from military service. The Wind Walker capsized in the waters off Point Couverden, southwest of Juneau.

The crew of a ferry named AMHS Hubbard heard the transmission and were the first to go to the scene, while the Coast Guard launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a response boat, according to the release. Seven cold-water diving suits and two flashlights were found in the water in the search area.

Emergency crews faced heavy snow, winds of up to 60 mph and 6-foot waves, with a winter storm warning in effect for part of the region, which lies in the Gulf of Alaska.

The Coast Guard said people who know the crew of the Wind Walker, which took off south of Point Couverden in the Icy Strait, said there were five people on board, but officials could not immediately confirm that number.
