Florida Football’s pursuit of the former five-star WR in the transfer portal is taking another turn

Like last season, Florida Football’s approach to the transfer portal is more of a slow and steady approach than a sprint. Therefore, nothing is official until it is official.

So while earlier in the week it seemed like the Gators were close to getting former five-star wide receiver Johntay Cook out of the transfer portal from Texas, a new insider prediction suggests that might not happen .

Florida Football: Ups and Downs

Already on Christmas Eve, Pete Nakos from On3 reported a prediction in the portal that Florida would be Cook’s travel destination. The appeal of DJ Lagway was one of the main reasons Cook came to Gainesville.

Well, with each passing day, the official signing was never released, and last night Mike Roach of 247 Sports recorded a crystal ball prediction that Cook would end up in Washington, citing that Cook would be a priority in the Husky offense .

What does it mean?

Admittedly, we started thinking out loud earlier in the week about what the wide receiver room would look like for Florida in 2025 and included Cook in our projections based on the On3 forecast.

Even then, we realized it would be difficult for Cook to crack the Gators’ main rotation in 2025. With the return of Eugene Wilson from injury and the signing of J.Michael Sturdivant from UCLA, there appears to be a spot up for grabs and there will be competition from Aidan Mizell, Dallas Wilson, Tank Hawkins and Vernell Brown.

Cook was the fourth-highest rated wide receiver in the class of 2023 but never managed to crack the rotation at Texas. The Longhorns brought in three transfer portal receivers of their own in 2024, all of whom landed ahead of Cook this season.

Nothing is official until it’s official, but it’s another twist in the winding road to finding out where Cook will end up in 2025.
