Just as the leisure travel season begins, daily dense fog here has wreaked havoc on passengers’ flight schedules to and from San Diego International Airport. And the potential for further disruption remains.

According to flight tracking service FlightAware, nearly 800 arriving and departing flights to the airport have experienced delays in the past three days.

While the National Weather Service sees signs that reduced visibility caused by the fog is moving inland, the possibility of a nighttime warning remains.

“We expect we could see areas of dense fog near the Interstate 15 corridor this evening, but the question still remains as to when it will become widespread enough to be a problem,” Casey said Oswant, a senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service Friday. “The fog can be quite tricky, but now most of the dense fog has cleared from the coast, so we need to see how dense fog is observed along the coast before we pull the trigger.”

Only low clouds remained near the coast by early evening, although dense fog could still form overnight, National Weather Service meteorologist Brandt Maxwell said.

It’s still too early to say exactly where there might be fog, although it could be heaviest inland, east of Interstate 5, as opposed to west of the highway, which was the case Thursday night, Maxwell said.

San Diego airport officials expect up to 1.3 million people to fly in and out of the airport during the 18-day holiday season that began Thursday. The busiest times at the airport are likely to be Friday through Monday. The airport posted a travel advisory on social media Friday morning, warning passengers to “be aware that there may be some flight delays due to fog.” Check with your airline before heading to the airport. “

On Friday evening, visibility could drop to as low as 1 mile due to the fog, Oswant said, but that would not be nearly as bad as Thursday evening, when visibility dropped to just a quarter mile around the airport by 8 p.m. It later dropped to under a quarter-mile by 4 a.m. Friday, it added.
