The Iowa football team will play Missouri in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday, December 30th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT (ESPN).

With bowl season comes decision season for players across college football. Here are the Iowa football players who opted out of the Music City Bowl vs. Missouri.

Why Kaleb Johnson opted out of the bowl game

Johnson had one of the best seasons ever for a Hawkeye running back, with 1,725 scrimmage yards and a school-record 23 TDs in a season. He announced on December 1 (after the final game of the regular season) that he would forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.

Johnson shared a long, heartfelt message on social media. Part of it read: “After much thought and reflection, I have decided to take the next step in my journey and declare for the 2025 NFL Draft. This decision was not easy for me, but I accept the challenges and opportunities ahead with great excitement and anticipation. The foundation I built here at Iowa prepared me for this moment, and I carry the Hawkeye spirit with me as I move forward.

Why Jermari Harris opted out of the bowl game

Harris, one of the Big Ten Conference’s best cornerbacks this season, did not play in the final two games of the regular season as he battled injury issues. Harris had an Instagram post on November 25 with the caption, “Thank you.”

“(Harris) has also been through a lot medically in the last three years. Jermari has hardware issues in his leg,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said Nov. 23. “It’s kind of three components.” The medical staff says he’s cleared, the player says he’s good to go, and then the coach has to say, “Yeah, I think you can function out there.” All three have to be aligned be. The first? If the medical staff says a man can’t do it, it doesn’t matter what the coach or player thinks. So it’s very, very easy there.”

“…You don’t know what kids are going through, what they’ve played with, all of that. Everyone has different pain thresholds and different medical circumstances.
