Folsom falls short in the regional bowl game

PITTSBURG, Calif. (KTXL) — It was a rematch of last year’s regional bowl game, which Folsom won. And the Bulldogs were on the verge of repeating that feat after taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. They would extend that lead to 21-0 in the second quarter.

But the pirates didn’t flinch. They fought back and ultimately won 28:27.

“At the end of the day, they made more plays than we did. They played better than us,” Folsom head coach Paul Doherty said. “It doesn’t take anything away from our kids, our season. Super proud of her.”

Folsom (12-2) scored a touchdown with a three-yard run by Ryder Lyons with about two minutes left late in the fourth quarter that brought the Bulldogs within one point. They went for two, but Lyons couldn’t get into the end zone.

Lyons, who was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year earlier in the day, had one last chance to lead his team down the field in the final minute, but the Bulldogs failed to score.

“I’m glad they’re hurting. I’m happy,” said Doherty. “Because it means something to them.” And they put a lot into it.”
