Syracuse men’s basketball (5-4) hosts Georgetown (7-2) for its 100th game at the JMA Wireless DomeTh All-time competition between programs on Saturday, December 14th. The game begins at 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the ACC Network.

Setting the stage
An 18-point second-half performance from Donnie Freeman helped propel the Orange past UAlbany, 102-85, at home on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The freshman finished his career with a career-best 24 points, securing team scorer honors for the second time in a row.

Syracuse took control of the game early and had a 47-34 lead at halftime. The Great Danes posed a threat in the second half, cutting the Orange’s lead to 11 with five minutes left, but an eight-point drive from Freeman increased the margin and ultimately sealed the win.

Georgetown comes into the JMA Dome with a 7-2 record, most recently against West Virginia (73-60) on Friday, December 6th. Saturday’s contest will be just the second road game for the Hoyas, as they played their first eight contests at home before traveling to face the Mountaineers.

The Hoyas are led by second-year head coach Ed Cooley, who came to Georgetown after stints at Fairfield and Providence. In his first season at the helm, the Hoyas went 9-23.

The Syracuse-Georgetown Series
Saturday’s competition will be the 100thTh All-time pairing between Syracuse and Georgetown in a series that dates back to 1929-1930. The Orange hold a 54-45 edge over the Hoyas in series wins, including back-to-back wins over the past two seasons.

Sharp shooting Syracuse
Syracuse had its best shooting performance of the season in the win over UAlbany. The Orange posted season-highs from the floor (63.5 percent), from the three-point arc (40.0 percent) and from the free throw line (88.9). The strong offensive performance helped ‘Cuse post its first 100-plus point regular season performance since November 22, 2023, in a 105-56 win over Chaminade.

Freeman leads the way
Freeman is coming off two straight 20-plus point games against Notre Dame and UAlbany, leading Syracuse in both contests. The freshman ranks second on the team with 14.0 points per contest JJ Starlingwho scores 19.8 points per game.

Freeman leads Syracuse with four double-doubles this season and is averaging a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game.

Carlos rises

Jaquan Carlos had a career performance in the win over UAlbany, recording his first Syracuse double-double with 12 points and 12 assists. In the last three contests, Carlos averaged 9.0 points and 7.6 assists.

Carlos’ double-double was the first since then that included assists Judah Mintz scored 10 points and 13 assists against Miami on January 20, 2024.

Deeply dominant
As a team, Syracuse averages 39.2 rebounds per game, ranking third in the ACC behind SMU (43.4) and Duke (40.2). The Orange put together a strong performance on the glass, outscoring UAlbany by a +11 margin (38-27). ‘Cuse also had a 24-point lead in the win over the Great Danes (62-38).

Exploring the Hoyas
Through the first nine contests, Georgetown was led by Thomas Sorber, who averaged a team-high 15.4 points per contest. He set his season high on November 9th when he scored 25 points against Fairfield.

Jayden Epps (14.2), Micah Peavy (13.6) and Drew Fielder (12.7) also all average double figures for the Hoyas.

As a unit, Georgetown is averaging 76.7 points per contest and has outscored its competition by 12.4 points per game. The Hoyas also collect 37.3 rebounds per game and 16.0 assists per game.

Freeman, Lampkin Jr. make preseason watch lists
Freeman is one of 20 players who made the preseason watch list for the 2025 Karl Malone Award, which recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men’s basketball. Freeman, a McDonald’s All-American and the second-highest ranked Syracuse recruit in program history, is one of two freshmen to make this year’s Malone Award watch list.

Lampkin Jr. is one of 20 candidates on the preseason watch list for the 2025 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which goes to the best center in men’s college basketball. Lampkin Jr. is in his first year with the Orange and is averaging 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.

The list for both awards will be narrowed down to ten at the end of January and just five at the end of February. In March, the five finalists for both awards will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar, Malone and the Hall of Fame Selection Committee, where the winners will be selected.
