Former assistant principal among those arrested in Renton child trafficking case

According to Renton police, officers posed as 14- and 15-year-olds on various social media platforms to contact potential offenders.

RENTON, Wash. – Seven men were arrested in connection with an undercover child sex trafficking operation conducted by Renton police in late September, including an assistant principal at a Seattle school.

The sting operation targeted people who wanted to engage in sexual activity with minors.

Renton Police Chief Deputy Ryan Rutledge said officers posed as 14- and 15-year-olds on various social media platforms to contact potential offenders.

The aim of the campaign is to “address the demand side of those seeking prostitution,” Rutledge said.

Among those arrested was Alex Diaz Rios, who was working as an assistant principal at TOPS K-8 in Seattle at the time. Diaz Rios was charged with patronizing a prostitute, a misdemeanor. According to Rutledge, “the person knew he was talking to a 15-year-old boy.”

Seattle Public Schools said it responded quickly when it learned of the charges and placed Diaz Rios on leave. He has since resigned.

The school district claimed it was not previously aware that the accused involved a minor. Renton police said the school has been notified.

Another notable arrest was Joseph Haufle, a twice-convicted sex offender. Court documents show Haufle told investigators, “I am fully aware that it is illegal.”

Rutledge emphasized the importance of such operations.

“When we go out and cast the net, these are the people who are attracting the worst of the worst criminals in our community,” Rutledge said.

All men charged in King County Superior Court have pleaded not guilty.

Seattle Public Schools has contacted the Office of Professional Practices and will submit a formal referral to the state for review of Diaz Rios’ professional license.

This operation highlights the ongoing problem of child exploitation in King County, with law enforcement actively working to combat such crimes.
