Former Mets starter Luis Severino signs a three-year contract with the A’s

Luis Severinowho spent the 2024 season with the Mets has found a new home.

According to multiple reports, Severino is signing a three-year deal with the Athletics worth $67 million. The contract includes an opt-out after the second season.

Severino had received the $21.05 million qualifying offer from the Mets, meaning New York will now receive draft compensation after Severino signed elsewhere. This compensatory pick will come after the fourth round of the 2025 MLB Draft.

The 30-year-old signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Mets last offseason, which worked out well for both the team and the player. After posting a 6.65 ERA with the Yankees in 2023, Severino bounced back significantly in Queens, posting a 3.91 ERA while surpassing the 30-start mark for the first time since the 2018 season.

Severino continued to be a key player for the Mets in the postseason, posting a 3.24 ERA in three starts. He gave the Mets quality innings with a grade of 6.0 in both Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against Milwaukee and Game 2 of the NLDS against Philadelphia.

Severino’s departure takes away a potential answer for a Mets rotation that needs to be rebuilt. For now, the Mets have done it Kodai Senga, the newly acquired Frankie MontasAnd David Peterson as locks for rotation, while others include internal options Jose Butto, Paul BlackburnAnd Tylor Megill.
