Former President Bill Clinton was admitted to a hospital in Washington, DC, on Monday afternoon where he is undergoing tests and observation after developing a fever, his spokesman told CNN.

“The president is doing well,” Clinton deputy chief of staff Angel Urena said in an interview with CNN, adding that the former president hoped to be home by Christmas. “He remains in good spirits and deeply appreciates the excellent care he is receiving.”

Clinton, 78, was at his home in Washington when he was taken to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. He is expected to remain hospitalized at least overnight, an aide said, describing the former president as “awake and alert.”

News of the former president’s hospitalization two days before Christmas spread quickly throughout the vast Clinton alumni network. A longtime Clinton aide said the former president’s condition was “by no means urgent or serious.”

Since leaving the White House nearly a quarter century ago, the 42nd president has endured several health struggles.

He underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery in New York in 2004 and experienced a partial lung collapse the following year. In 2010, he underwent another heart operation to insert two stents into a coronary artery.

He was hospitalized in Los Angeles for six days in 2021 due to a urological infection that spread to his bloodstream.

Clinton spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August and has been extremely active on the campaign trail this fall. Since the election, he has maintained a tight travel schedule with the release of his new book, Citizen: My Life After the White House.
