Franklin Fire: A wildfire in Malibu is burning near Pepperdine University, evacuating thousands and destroying homes

The Franklin Fire burning in the Malibu area is affecting air quality in a portion of the Southland.

The Air Quality Management District has issued a smoke advisory due to the fire.

Smoke is expected to have the greatest impact in the northwest coastal county of LA. Parts of the San Fernando Valley, Santa Monica and downtown LA could also be affected by the wind shift.

Officials say if you can smell smoke or see ash from a wildfire, you should avoid or limit any outdoor activities.

“The main pollutant in wildfire smoke is fine dust particles. These are microscopic particles that can reach very deep into the lungs. “They can have quite serious health effects, especially in people who belong to sensitive groups, so children, older adults, etc., pregnant women, people with pre-existing heart and lung problems such as asthma or COPD,” said Scott Epstein of AQMD .

Experts say if you’re affected by wildfire smoke, stay indoors with windows closed and run an air conditioner or air purifier if you have one.
