Franklin Fire burns nearly 2,200 acres in Malibu

A wildfire broke out in Malibu on Monday evening and quickly burned nearly 2,200 acres the next morning, authorities said.

As of 8 a.m., several buildings had been destroyed or damaged by the fire, but no one was injured, officials said during a news conference.

The so-called Franklin Fire ignited around 10:52 p.m. when the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded near Malibu Canyon Road, north of the Pepperdine University campus, according to reports from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire broke out amid extreme winds in Santa Ana. For the second time in just over a month, the National Weather Service issued a “particularly hazardous” warning for much of the region. These are triggered during extreme conditions that can cause fires to ignite easily and spread quickly, officials said.

The warning went into effect Monday evening and was expected to remain in place until at least Tuesday afternoon. Gusts of up to 80 miles per hour were forecast in some wind-prone locations. Humidity could drop into the single digits.
