Franklin Fire maps show wildfires in Malibu, evacuation areas in Southern California

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) — Maps provided by fire departments Tuesday morning showed the updated scope of the 2,200-acre Franklin Fire and its evacuation areas in and around Malibu.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued for the area east of Malibu Canyon Road and south of Piuma Road, as well as the Serra Retreat area, according to real-time maps created by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Cal Fire.

The fire broke out shortly before 11 p.m. Monday and spread quickly south, jumping the Pacific Coast Highway and spreading to the ocean, where large homes line the beach and rugged inland ravines are notoriously fire-prone. At one point, flames threatened the historic Malibu Pier, but the structure was protected, officials said.

Firefighters working in rugged terrain protected homes in the canyon overnight while some residents evacuated on foot with their horses. As the sun rose Tuesday, thick smoke billowed over the Pepperdine campus and adjacent mountains that slope toward the coast. A curfew was lifted, but the university canceled classes and final exams for Tuesday.

It was not immediately known how the fire started, but firefighters estimated that nearly 3 square miles of trees and dry brush had burned and structures were at risk.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
