Frito-Lay is recalling some Lay’s classic potato chips due to a “life-threatening” allergy risk

Frito-Lay is recalling a limited quantity of 13 ounces. Bag of classic potato chips from Lay’s, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration citing the risk that some consumers could experience a “life-threatening allergic reaction” due to an undeclared allergen.

The FDA said it was warned by a consumer that the product may contain undeclared milk. The recalled bags of chips were distributed to some retail stores and e-commerce merchants in Oregon and Washington and were available for sale beginning November 3, 2024.

“Individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk are at risk of experiencing a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product,” the FDA said in the recall notice released Thursday.

According to the release, no allergic reactions have been reported in connection with the recall. Additionally, no other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are affected.

The recalled chips include Lay’s Classic Potato Chips in 13-ounce flexible molds. (368.5 gram) bag with UPC code 28400 31041, a Guaranteed Fresh date of February 11, 2025, and one of two manufacturing codes: 6462307xx or 6463307xx.

FDA general guidelines recommend that consumers who have purchased recalled foods discard the product or return it to the retailer for a full refund.

In a similar event, Costco in October recalled nearly 80,000 pounds of branded butter because the key ingredient, milk, was missing from the product’s label.
