Front Street Park in downtown Leavenworth was destroyed

Sometime overnight, a truck plowed through Front Street Park in downtown Leavenworth, prompting the city to close the popular sledding area on Dec. 22.

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. – It’s something only the Grinch would think of in Washington’s merriest town, just days before Christmas.

Sometime Saturday night, a truck was captured on video driving through the lawn of Front Street Park in downtown Leavenworth.

The video shows the truck driving rapidly in circles, kicking up icy mud and crashing into nearby snowdrifts. At least two people can be seen filming the truck tearing up public space.

Although the Chelan County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the incident was under investigation, no suspects were in custody as of Sunday evening.

Police told KING 5 that the truck that caused the damage appeared to be a Toyota Tundra, but did not provide further details.

The city of Leavenworth announced a temporary closure of the area on Instagram. In the winter months it is often used as a toboggan run for children.

“Due to property damage last night, the lawn area at Front Street Park is temporarily CLOSED,” the post reads. “We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding as we work to restore usability to our downtown park.”

This comes as many families flock to the Bavarian town to enjoy the snow, shops and glittering lights of Leavenworth.

“I was blown away that someone did that. It was super brave,” said Tanner Bombardieri. He said this hurts not only their hearts but also their business as they usually sell sleds to families.

“It’s very unfortunate,” he said. “Because of what they did, no one can sled on it anymore.”

City officials said the chamber’s Christmastown program at the pavilion will continue as planned.
