Georgia avoids ‘twitching’ in win over Georgia Tech

Georgia avoids ‘twitching’ in win over Georgia Tech

For the second time this season, it can be said that Georgia played one of the worst first halves in recent memory.

For the first time since 2019, Georgia went scoreless at halftime and trailed Georgia Tech 17-0. But just like against Alabama, the Bulldogs fought their way back into it. This time, Georgia managed a 44-42 win over Georgia Tech in an eight-overtime classic.

The Bulldogs will certainly learn a lot about what they did wrong in the coming days. But they have also learned once again that they have what it takes to win, even when everything seems to go wrong.

“Our seniors, our team, our leadership, they don’t shy away,” Georgia’s head coach said Kirby Smart said. “They find a way to be 14 points down, I don’t know, with five minutes left. Carson never batted an eye, and the defense made a stop and a turnover.”

Georgia Tech had a 14-point lead at two different points in the fourth quarter. The first lead narrowed to a one-yard touchdown Nate Frazier run. Then disaster struck again Haynes King led the Yellow Jackets down the field in six plays and reached the end zone with an 11-yard scramble.

However, Georgia once again had its back to the wall and responded. First, there was an eight-play, 75-yard drive that was capped off with a 17-yard touchdown pass Carson Beck To Dominic Lovett.

Then came the heroics from the senior safety in the fourth quarter Dan Jackson, whose hit on King forced the fumble that helped the Bulldogs force overtime after another touchdown hit to Lovett.

From then on, the overtime epic followed. Once again, the Bulldogs overcame the odds. But Georgia’s challenges weren’t just limited to the field.

“It was a really short week. It was a tough week,” Smart said. “Remember, Tech played in this deal on Thursday night and caught us on two days. You don’t normally get that in our league, but that’s what you get when you cross leagues and move the game up.”

While Georgia sent the Yellow Jackets home with their seventh straight loss in the rivalry, things don’t get any easier for the Bulldogs. They will quickly begin preparations for next Saturday’s SEC Championship Game, where they will face the winner of Texas-Texas A&M.

“No matter if you have the toughest schedule in the country, probably the toughest schedule in Georgia history, you keep fighting,” Smart said when asked about his biggest lesson. “You keep fighting and everyone wants to shoot you.”
