Giants extend lead in race for No. 1 NFL draft pick

Giants extend lead in race for No. 1 NFL draft pick

There are only three weeks left in the 2024 NFL regular season, but about a quarter of the league’s teams are already looking ahead to 2025. The next month will be about building for the future for these franchises as they compete for the top spot. Pick next year’s NFL Draft.

The race for the top spot in the draft is getting thinner. The New York Jets’ win over the Jacksonville Jaguars effectively eliminates New York from the race for the No. 1 pick. After having the fourth-best odds for the No. 1 pick in the league last week, the Jets now have a chance at 4-10 of less than one percent to finish with the top pick.

Only five teams still have a chance of more than two percent of ending up in first place in the overall standings. The scenarios surrounding the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders continue to consolidate. While the Raiders don’t play until Monday night, the Giants now have an almost one in two chance of securing first place after their loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

“Lamar Jackson’s 5 touchdowns lift Ravens past Giants 35-14: Takeaways”

The Giants didn’t need a last-second field goal block to increase their chances this week. Baltimore took care of a thorough dismantling of the Giants, with Lamar Jackson throwing five touchdowns against the Giants’ secondary.

New York could be without its fourth quarterback after losing this game. After Drew Lock was placed in a walking boot and ruled out of Sunday’s game, Tommy DeVito left the game with a concussion. He was replaced by Tim Boyle, who finished the game. With a massive schedule remaining and the quarterback roster getting thinner, it’s hard to imagine the Giants pulling out a win and falling out of pole position.

Remaining schedule: at the Atlanta Falcons, the Indianapolis Colts, at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Las Vegas Raiders (2-11)

The Raiders will have more concrete chances after Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Until then, however, the Raiders’ odds are down slightly from 35 percent last week. Due to the weaker schedule, the Raiders remain in second place behind the Giants. However, Las Vegas also keeps losing important players. Less than a week after quarterback Aidan O’Connell was carted off the field, defensive end Maxx Crosby confirmed he will undergo season-ending ankle surgery. A good schedule will be key when deciding between Las Vegas and the Giants, and right now Las Vegas has an easier schedule. If the losses pile up and they lose, the Raiders can clinch the top spot.

Remaining schedule: Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Chargers.

New England’s result from the game against the Arizona Cardinals has yet to be updated as they are still playing, leaving the Patriots at the mercy of the rest of the league. After their bye, the Patriots’ odds remained steady after initially falling just 1 percent. New England needs losses to both Las Vegas and New York to even be competitive for the top overall pick, but they remain one of the most competitive three-win teams for the top overall pick. With two games against the Buffalo Bills in the next three weeks, New England should remain competitive for the top pick as the season progresses.

Remaining schedule: at Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, Buffalo Bills.

Cowboys dominate Panthers 30-14 to keep slim playoff hopes alive: Insights

Carolina’s streak of one-point losses to competent teams ended Sunday with a stunning 30-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. After showing a lot of positive growth in recent weeks, the Panthers reminded the league that this is a team that still desperately needs a top pick in this year’s draft.
