Giants vs. Saints, Week 14: Saints win 14-11

In-game updates

4th quarter

The game came to a close when the Giants got the ball back inside the 2:00 warning and moved all over the field thanks to great plays from Malik Nabers and Drew Lock. It appeared as if Graham Gano would safely send the game into overtime with a chip shot from 35 yards. Brian Bresee’s thumb had other ideas and blocked the field goal to give the Saints the win.

The Giants managed to drive 82 yards down the field late in the 4th quarter, survived a missed interception and converted a 4th-and-10. The Giants attempted a 2-point conversion in which the ball was tipped and Malik Nabers was tipped , and they managed to do so, somehow getting the ball to the ground despite being surrounded by Saints defenders.

The Giants and Saints traded special teams errors early in the fourth quarter. Giants kicker Graham Gano first scored a 48-yard field goal to make it 14:6. However, that field goal was wiped off the board by an unnecessary roughness penalty and the Giants were pushed back 15 yards. Jamie Gillan took a punt that was downed at the Saints’ 11-yard line. This play resulted in a running-in-the-kicker penalty against the Saints, which the Giants declined.

Third quarter

The Giants defense finally collapses and the Saints extend their lead to 14-3 over the Giants with 3:40 left in the third quarter. Derek Carr found tight end Foster Moreau for a 32-yard gain, followed by an 11-yard touchdown by fellow TE Juwan Johnson on the next play.

Left guard Jon Runyan Jr. is questionable to return due to an ankle injury.

Tre Hawkins III finally gave the Giants their second interception of the season with the first of his career. He intercepted a deep pass from Derek Carr, essentially turning an attempt to convert a 3rd-and-10 into a long arm punt. The Giants will get the ball at their 17 yard line.

Wow! Tre Hawkins throws an interception. This is the Giants’ first interception since Week 1, breaking an 11-game NFL record drought. Also her first appearance with a defensive back all season. Hawkins intercepted a high ball from Derek Carr for Kevin Austin. #NYGiants

The Giants got the ball early in the second half but – once again – couldn’t get anything done on offense. Making matters worse, guard Jon Runyan Jr. suffered an apparent knee injury when his right leg was hit on a third-and-3 run.

Second quarter

The Giants defense played very well to stop the game, but they were let down by an offense that can’t get out of the way.

The Giants had an injury scare with four minutes left in the second quarter when rookie S Tyler Nubin left the field with an apparent ankle injury. Luckily, he returned quickly with his ankle taped.

The Giants were unable to take advantage of the good field position after the fast touchdown. After a mysterious decision by Drew Lock to run sideways while fighting for a 1st down, they go three-and-out.

Early in the second quarter, Drew Lock had his first completion of the game, an 11-yard pass to Daniel Bellinger and a 17-yard catch from Malik Nabers. Lock took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter, but that included two bad drops and two batted passes. The Giants couldn’t finish the drive in the end zone and had to settle for a field goal.

First quarter

The Giants got a fantastic punt from Jamie Gillan that pinned the Saints at their 2-yard line. This was followed by a great play by Adoree Jackson, who stopped a big pass down the field. Unfortunately, the Giants couldn’t capitalize and the Saints moved the ball 98 yards down the field with 1:19 left in the first quarter.

The Saints rushed for 98 yards in 9 plays. Kendre Miller’s 8-yard TD run caps the drive. 7-0 Saints with 1:19 remaining in Q1. Giants had two possessions at midfield and got nothing. The Saints get the ball at their 2-yard line and walk the length of the field to take the lead. #NYGiants

The Saints got the ball to start the game, but the Giants held firm, limiting them to a net of 5 yards after a run for a loss of 1 and a pass for six yards. On the ensuing punt, the Giants gained fantastic field position. Drew Lock secured a 3rd-and-15 attempt, but incurred an intentional grounding penalty on a 4th-and-8 attempt to give the Saints the ball for their second drive.
